The incident occurred at a construction site in the 2200 block of Shotgun Road, east of the I-75 interchange with Royal Palm Boulevard. Authorities received a report of a possible drowning after an excavator went into a retention pond. When rescue crews arrived, the heavy machine was completely submerged beneath the water.<\/p>\n
Rescue personnel searched the pond and were able to locate and pull Smith from the water. Davie Fire Rescue reported that he was in cardiac arrest when crews reached him. He was immediately transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where medical teams worked to save his life. Sadly, he later died.<\/p>\n
Police indicated that the incident appeared to have been an accident, while the Davie Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) opened investigations into what happened at the worksite.
