Family of Four Killed in Gibson Township Crash, Tunkhannock Community Mourns Peter, Sandra, Noah and Layla Thatcher.
GIBSON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania — A devastating tragedy struck Susquehanna County on Saturday morning, August 29, 2026, as four members of the Thatcher family were killed in a single-vehicle crash along Rock Mountain Drive in Gibson Township. The victims were identified as Peter Thatcher, 45, Sandra Thatcher, 45, Noah Thatcher, 11, and Layla Thatcher, 10, all residents of Tunkhannock.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers were dispatched at approximately 10:16 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious one-vehicle crash near 1365 Rock Mountain Drive. When emergency responders arrived, they discovered a sedan that had traveled nearly 60 feet down a steep embankment. Sadly, all four occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Multiple fire departments, EMS personnel, and the Susquehanna County Coroner responded to assist with the difficult recovery operation. The heartbreaking loss has sent shockwaves through the Tunkhannock community, where family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones are now grieving the deaths of an entire family.
Authorities have not released details regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway or plunge down the embankment. Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
