According to the Selma Police Department, officers responded around 4:38 a.m. to the area of Logan Street and Cypress Street after receiving a report of a woman who had suffered a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers located Mercedes and immediately attempted to save her life. She was taken to Adventist Health Selma for medical treatment, but sadly, she later succumbed to her injuries.

Police are treating the shooting as a homicide. Investigators believe the incident may have followed a disturbance at a nearby residence and are continuing to examine the events that preceded the shooting.
