Kannapolis Officer-Involved Shooting, Lorenzo Devonte Gray Dies After Police Encounter.

 

Lorenzo Devonte Gray, 33, of Kannapolis, North Carolina, was killed following an officer-involved shooting Friday, August 14, 2026, as police responded to a report of a man firing a gun in the area of South Main Street near Bell Street. According to information released by Kannapolis Police, officers encountered an armed suspect during the response, and shots were fired.

 

Authorities said the shooting occurred around noon near the intersection of South Main Street and Bethpage Road. Police reported that officers encountered Gray while responding to the situation, and he was shot by officers. He was transported to Atrium Health Cabarrus for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.

 

The officers involved were identified as Lt. Justin Smith and Sgt. Matthew Hoehman. Both officers were placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducts an independent investigation into the shooting.

 

The SBI investigation is expected to examine the events leading up to the shooting, the actions of the officers and the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force. At this stage, it is important to allow investigators to complete their work before drawing conclusions about the incident.
