Saylor Hayes, a Little Life Gone Far Too Soon.
Five-year-old Saylor Hayes of Bristol, Virginia, has left behind a heartbreaking story that no family or community should ever have to endure. Her parents, John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested in connection with her death after Saylor disappeared during a family stay in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Authorities said her body was found the following day in waters near where she was last seen, following an extensive search involving hundreds of people and multiple agencies.
Saylor was autistic and severely nonverbal, according to arrest warrants, which also stated that she had a known affinity for water and a history of elopement. Her disappearance immediately sparked an urgent search, with people coming together in hopes of bringing the little girl safely home. Tragically, those hopes ended in profound sorrow.
Authorities allege that Saylor had previously been equipped with a monitoring device, but that it had been removed before the family left Virginia. The warrants further allege that her parents directed search efforts toward tracking technology despite knowing she was not wearing the device and directed efforts away from a nearby body of water. These are allegations, and the charges will be addressed through the legal process.
But beyond the investigation and courtroom proceedings was a five-year-old little girl with an entire life ahead of her—a child who deserved more birthdays, more laughter, more sunsets, more gentle moments and more tomorrows.
Saylor’s life was far too short, but her name should never be forgotten.
