In Loving Memory of Joel Costa and Jonathan Welch, Remembering Two Lives Lost in a Tragic Crash.
With profound sadness, we remember Joel Costa, 29, of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, and Jonathan Welch, 44, of Norton, Massachusetts, whose lives were tragically taken following a devastating multi-vehicle collision on Route 295 in Cumberland, Rhode Island, on August 20, 2026.
According to authorities, the crash happened around 3:31 p.m. near the Mendon Road overpass on Route 295 North. Multiple vehicles were involved, including a Dodge Ram 1500, a Hyundai Ioniq, and an Acura ADX. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports of a rollover collision, finding both Joel and Jonathan trapped in their vehicles.
The Hyundai began to smolder, creating an especially urgent situation for rescuers. Firefighters and rescue personnel worked quickly to free the occupants as they battled the dangerous conditions. Despite the courageous efforts of first responders, the crash resulted in two heartbreaking deaths.
Joel, who was operating the Hyundai, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jonathan, who was driving the Dodge Ram, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
As investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision, families and loved ones are left to face a pain that words cannot adequately describe.
Joel was only 29, with many hopes, dreams, and years still ahead of him. Jonathan, 44, leaves behind memories that will forever remain precious to those who knew and loved him.
