Heartbreaking Cass County Crash, Ian Frye Killed as Police Say Cornelio Vasquez Fled Traffic Stop at 109 MPH.
Ian Frye, 49, of Christine, North Dakota, lost his life in a devastating crash allegedly involving 19-year-old Cornelio Christian Vasquez IV, a Grand Forks man accused of fleeing a traffic stop at 109 mph before his BMW slammed into Frye’s Honda Accord. Frye, a husband and father of four, was reportedly driving home from his recording studio when the violent collision occurred early Sunday, August 23, leaving his family facing an unimaginable loss.
According to the North Dakota State Patrol, a trooper attempted to stop Vasquez after allegedly observing him traveling 109 mph in a 55-mph zone near Cass County Road 14 and County Road 81. Authorities say Vasquez did not stop, turned off his headlights and ran a stop sign before crashing into Frye’s vehicle.
Frye died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. His death has left behind a grieving family and loved ones struggling to understand how an ordinary trip home could end in such profound tragedy.
Vasquez and two juvenile passengers, ages 16 and 17, were also injured and taken to a Fargo hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities said all three occupants of the BMW were wearing seat belts.
Vasquez was later arrested and faces multiple charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, manslaughter, fleeing a peace officer in a vehicle resulting in risk of death or serious bodily injury, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
As the legal process moves forward, the loss of Ian Frye remains the most painful part of this tragedy. A husband, a father and a beloved member of his community, Ian’s life was suddenly taken, leaving memories that his family and loved ones will carry forever.
