A LIFE LOST IN CUSTODY, A DEATH THAT DEMANDS TO BE REMEMBERED.
Some losses leave behind more than grief—they leave questions that refuse to be silenced. Scott Worthy, 57, of Jonesboro, Georgia, died on September 6, 2025, after becoming gravely ill while detained at the Clayton County Jail. His death has now been ruled a homicide by the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, which cited medical neglect and uninhabitable living conditions while he was in custody.
Worthy was ultimately transported to Grady Memorial Hospital after reportedly experiencing a severe physical decline. According to the medical examiner, he told paramedics that he had been unable to get up, obtain food, or use the restroom for approximately four days. Responders reportedly found him in extremely poor condition, with clothing saturated by bodily fluids.
Medical records documented severe skin injuries, including blistering, skin detachment, and dead tissue. Tests later confirmed a serious infection involving Streptococcus pyogenes, leading to septic shock, respiratory failure, kidney failure, and other devastating complications.
The medical examiner concluded that failures to recognize and respond to Worthy’s deteriorating condition contributed materially to the circumstances surrounding his death.
Scott Worthy should not be remembered only for the circumstances of his final days. He was a human life, a person whose story ended in tragedy.
May his name be remembered. May his suffering never be forgotten. And may the questions surrounding his death continue to seek the truth.
