Paris Wilder was killed after allegedly opening fire on Brevard County deputies Brian Potters and Tyler Thoman during a traffic stop in West Melbourne, Florida. The violent encounter unfolded suddenly, turning an otherwise routine police stop into a desperate fight for survival.

According to authorities, Wilder was a passenger in a vehicle stopped near U.S. 192 and Interstate 95 on August 30, 2021. When he was asked to leave the vehicle, officials said he emerged with a rifle and immediately began firing at the deputies. Deputy Potters was struck in the lower leg during the exchange.

The danger continued even after Wilder was wounded. Authorities said he moved around the vehicles while continuing to engage the deputies before attacking Potters with the butt of the rifle, striking him in the head several times. Deputy Thoman then intervened and fired at Wilder, ultimately stopping the threat.

Wilder, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. Potters was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to make a full recovery. Thoman was not reported as seriously injured.
