Remembering Darrel Gray Jr. and Eleanor “Nora” Gray, A Family’s Heartbreaking Loss in West Leyden.
Darrel Gray Jr., 52, of West Leyden, New York, and 17-year-old Eleanor “Nora” Gray, his passenger and family member, are being mourned after a devastating crash claimed both of their lives on State Route 294 in the Town of Ava.
The heartbreaking collision happened around 7 a.m. on August 27, when the Volkswagen SUV carrying Darrel and Nora crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a westbound tractor-trailer near Gleasman Road. Both Darrel and Nora were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their deaths have sent waves of grief through the Adirondack Central School District, where both were part of the school community. Darrel was known as the head coach of the district’s modified football team, a role that allowed him to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. His sudden passing is a devastating loss for his family, students, colleagues, and everyone who knew him.
For Nora, only 17 years old, the tragedy is especially heartbreaking. She had a lifetime of possibilities ahead of her, dreams waiting to unfold, and countless moments yet to be lived. Instead, her life ended far too soon alongside her loved one, Darrel.
