Tonight, hearts are heavy across Pike County as a mother and her precious young daughter are mourned after a devastating crash on Indiana State Road 64 claimed three lives. Among those lost were 41-year-old Amanda Wertman and her 8-year-old daughter, Michaela Wertman, whose lives were taken far too soon.

The heartbreaking collision occurred late Monday evening near the Pike–Dubois county line after a multi-county police pursuit. Authorities reported that a red Toyota Camry fleeing from law enforcement was involved in a violent head-on collision on IN-64 near County Road 900 E. The crash resulted in vehicles overturning and becoming engulfed in flames, prompting a massive emergency response and the closure of the roadway.
The person driving the Toyota also died in the crash. Three other children were hospitalized following the collision and are expected to recover.
But while the roads eventually reopen and the emergency lights disappear, the pain left behind does not simply disappear.
