Mother and Daughter Killed in Devastating Head-On Collision.
Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, were killed Saturday evening when a Ford Mustang driven by 32-year-old Jose Caballero Nolasco crashed head-on into their Toyota Camry while traveling the wrong way on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland. The devastating collision occurred around 6:46 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-270, just south of Democracy Boulevard in the Bethesda area.
According to Maryland State Police, Nolasco was driving the Mustang northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when it struck the Toyota carrying Shamima, Areebah, a 62-year-old man who was driving, and an 8-year-old girl. The impact was catastrophic, claiming the lives of Shamima and Areebah and leaving other members of the family injured.
The 62-year-old driver and the 8-year-old girl were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The young girl was reported to remain hospitalized in stable condition, adding another painful dimension to a tragedy that has devastated the family.
Nolasco was also injured and taken to a hospital before being released and transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center. Authorities have charged him with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and one count involving life-threatening injury by motor vehicle. Investigators believe impairment contributed to the crash.
According to prosecutors and police, investigators found open beer cans inside the Mustang, and Nolasco reportedly admitted that he had been drinking. His blood-alcohol test results were still pending at the time of the latest reports. A judge later ordered him held without bond as the case moves forward.
The southbound lanes of I-270 were closed for approximately five hours while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence. Maryland State Police continue to investigate exactly where the Mustang entered the highway going the wrong way and how long it traveled before the fatal collision.
But beyond the charges and investigation are two lives that can never be replaced. Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin were mother and daughter, traveling together when an ordinary journey became a heartbreaking final moment.
Their family is now left with grief, memories, photographs, and the painful absence of two people who should have had so much more time.
