John Daniel Ratcliffe, 38, A Life Remembered With Love and Sorrow.

With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the York County and Blacksburg communities mourn the heartbreaking loss of John Daniel Ratcliffe, 38, whose life came to a tragic end Saturday evening following a drowning in the Broad River near Blacksburg, South Carolina.

John had spent the afternoon at the river with friends, arriving around 3 p.m. What began as time shared with people close to him soon turned into an unimaginable tragedy when his friends realized they could no longer find him. A search began around 8:20 p.m., and about 30 minutes later, John was found fully clothed and face down in approximately three feet of water near the Duke Energy hydro dam on 99 Island Road.

A friend immediately pulled him from the river while emergency medical personnel worked desperately to save his life. Despite their efforts, John could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified John as a resident of Edgefield Road in York County. Friends reportedly told investigators that John could not swim, adding a particularly heartbreaking dimension to the circumstances surrounding his passing.

At just 38 years old, John leaves behind memories that will remain precious to everyone who knew and loved him. His sudden departure is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change and how deeply one person can be missed.

May John Daniel Ratcliffe rest peacefully. May his memory continue to live in the hearts of his family and friends, and may those grieving his loss find comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.
