In Loving Memory of Leopoldo Pantoja, A Life Remembered After Tragic Lake Sam Rayburn Drowning.
With profound sadness, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the loss of Leopoldo Pantoja, 57, whose life came to a tragic end after he disappeared while swimming in Lake Sam Rayburn in Jasper County, Texas.
Pantoja went missing Thursday afternoon after entering the lake with his wife near Twin Dikes. The couple had reportedly been several hundred yards from an island when they entered the water to cool off. During the incident, their boat drifted away, leaving them stranded in the lake. Pantoja attempted to swim toward the boat but was tragically not seen again.
His wife was rescued by a civilian on a jet ski and safely brought back to shore. Meanwhile, a large-scale search operation was launched to find Pantoja. Fire departments, Texas Game Wardens, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Texas EquuSearch, Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft, volunteers, and other agencies joined the search effort.
After three days of searching, heartbreaking confirmation came Sunday morning, August 16, when a member of the Lake Rayburn Volunteer Fire Department located and recovered Pantoja’s body from the lake at approximately 7:30 a.m.
His recovery ended days of uncertainty for his loved ones, but it also brought the devastating reality of his passing. Those who knew Leopoldo will now carry his memory in their hearts, remembering the moments they shared and the life he lived.
