In Loving Memory of Sofronie Hartzog, Mother of Five Tragically Lost in Crown Heights Shooting.
Sofronie Hartzog, a 33-year-old mother of five, is being remembered after she was tragically killed in a shooting in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood early Sunday morning. Her death has left her family, loved ones, and members of the community mourning a life taken far too soon.
According to police, officers responded to a 911 call at about 2:23 a.m. near Bergen Street and Howard Avenue, where a large crowd had gathered near Ooh La La Lounge and Bar. Investigators said a verbal dispute reportedly broke out before gunfire erupted. Hartzog was struck by a bullet in the back, while a 34-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Emergency medical personnel rushed Hartzog to Brookdale Hospital, but despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead. The injured man was transported to Kings County Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Police said surveillance footage appeared to show a black vehicle circling the block around the time of the shooting. Residents reported hearing numerous gunshots during the chaotic incident, while investigators continued working to determine what led to the confrontation and who was responsible.
For Hartzog’s five children and those who knew and loved her, the tragedy represents an immeasurable loss. A mother’s presence can never truly be replaced, and her family now faces the painful days ahead without her.
