In Loving Memory of Seven Lives Lost, A66 Crash Leaves Communities in Deep Mourning.
The Teesside community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of seven people who died in a devastating collision on the A66 near South Bank, close to Middlesbrough, in the early hours of Saturday. Among those killed were Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who were described as brave officers dedicated to protecting their communities and serving the public.
The tragedy unfolded shortly before 4 a.m. after a Volkswagen Passat was seen travelling at speed along Lime Road in Teesville. Security footage reportedly captured the vehicle passing homes at around 3:36 a.m., followed moments later by two police vehicles with their lights flashing and sirens sounding.
Police are understood to have later ended the pursuit. Just minutes afterward, at approximately 3:40 a.m., the Volkswagen was involved in a catastrophic head-on collision with a marked police car travelling in the opposite direction on the A66. The crash claimed seven lives and left families, colleagues and friends facing an unimaginable loss.
The deaths of PC Blades and PC Clough have particularly affected the Cleveland Police family. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described the officers as courageous men who were committed to their duties but tragically never returned home to their loved ones at the end of their shift.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the collision, thoughts remain with every family affected by this devastating tragedy. The seven lives lost will be remembered with love, dignity and profound respect.
May PC Matthew Blades, PC Tom Clough and all seven victims rest in eternal peace. Their memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
