Edward Scott Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Edward Scott

The Midland community is grieving after a heartbreaking act of violence claimed the life of Edward Scott, 62, during a devastating mass shooting that unfolded on Friday morning in Midland.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the terrifying incident began around 8:00 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Wall Street when authorities received urgent reports of an active shooter situation. Investigators later identified the gunman as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, who allegedly opened fire indiscriminately on civilians and responding officers, creating chaos and panic throughout the area.

Authorities say Villarreal fired multiple rounds as innocent people scrambled for safety. During the violent attack, Edward Scott was fatally shot and sadly pronounced dead, becoming the lone victim who lost his life in the horrifying tragedy. In addition to Scott’s death, ten other victims suffered injuries and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals, where they continue receiving medical treatment. Officials confirmed that despite the intense exchange of gunfire, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

Following the shooting, Villarreal barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. At approximately 12:30 p.m., officers entered the building and discovered Villarreal deceased inside, bringing the terrifying ordeal to an end.

Investigators later revealed that the suspect had already been wanted in connection with an attempted capital murder of a peace officer investigation. Authorities say just two days earlier, on June 10, Villarreal allegedly fired multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a dangerous vehicle pursuit, raising even more questions surrounding the violent events that followed.

Now, loved ones are left mourning the painful loss of Edward Scott, whose sudden death has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, especially his wife, Laura Vasquez Scott, relatives, and friends.

As the investigation continues under the Texas Rangers, the community stands united in grief.

Rest in Peace, Edward Scott. Gone far too soon, but forever remembered.
