Fatal Columbus Crash on I-270 Ramp, Driver Dies After Striking Light Pole.
A tragic single-vehicle crash on Columbus’ east side early Saturday morning claimed the life of 36-year-old Maxine Ohakim, according to authorities. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on August 15, 2026, as Ohakim was driving a white Honda CR-V from East Main Street toward the northbound ramp of Interstate 270.
Police said the vehicle left the roadway and struck a light pole alongside the ramp. The impact left Ohakim critically injured. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities confirmed that Ohakim was the only person inside the vehicle, meaning no other occupants were injured in the crash.
The circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway remain under investigation. At this time, police have not publicly determined why the crash occurred, and investigators continue working to establish the events leading up to the collision.
The sudden loss has brought tragedy to Ohakim’s loved ones and serves as another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a routine journey can turn devastating. While investigators work to understand what happened, family and friends are left grieving the loss of a 36-year-old woman whose life ended far too soon.
