With deep sorrow, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the tragic loss of Christopher P. McClure, 50, of Richland, Washington, who died following a devastating tanker crash late Saturday night near Waitsburg.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 9:54 p.m. on eastbound State Route 124 near milepost 41.6, about five miles west of Waitsburg in Walla Walla County. Christopher was identified as the person who lost his life in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities have notified his next of kin.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the semi-truck fuel tanker struck a power pole, causing a significant fuel spill that ignited a natural brush fire. The tanker subsequently rolled and came to rest across the roadway, completely blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes. Investigators cited speed too fast for conditions as the preliminary cause of the crash.
The heartbreaking incident led to a full closure of SR-124 between mileposts 41 and 45 while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. The roadway was later reopened early Sunday morning.
