In Loving Memory, Five Young Lives Remembered After Tragic M9 Crash.

With profound sadness, families, friends, and communities are mourning the heartbreaking deaths of Joe Carthy, 15, Alex McCarthy, 17, Kamil Pustkowski, 17, Jeremy O’Brien, 18, and Jack Kennedy, 17, five teenagers whose lives were tragically cut short in the devastating M9 motorway crash on August 16, 2026.

A deeply emotional balloon release was held in their honour, bringing together relatives, friends, neighbours, and members of communities across Athy, Carlow, Limerick, and surrounding areas. Hundreds of blue and white balloons were released into the sky as a touching symbol of remembrance, while messages of love, prayers, and promises that the five boys would never be forgotten were attached to the balloons.

The teenagers were travelling in a BMW shortly before 3 a.m. when it was involved in a devastating head-on collision after travelling on the wrong carriageway between Junctions 3 and 4 near Moone, County Kildare. The crash also involved another vehicle carrying three women and a seven-year-old boy, all of whom remain in hospital with injuries described as serious to critical.

Those who knew the five boys have remembered them as young people filled with life, laughter, friendship, and loyalty. Their sudden passing has left families and communities struggling to understand a loss that came far too soon.

As investigations continue, thoughts remain with the grieving families and the injured survivors. May Joe, Alex, Kamil, Jeremy, and Jack be remembered not only for the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths, but for the lives, friendships, memories, and love they shared.

May they rest peacefully, and may their families find strength and comfort in the days ahead. They will never be forgotten.
