Erin Smith was tragically taken from this world far too soon, and Keegan Martens, 19, has been identified by authorities as the suspect in connection with her death. “I love you so much Erin Smith. At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, Great Bend police officers responded to the 1400 block of Lakin Avenue following a 911 hang-up call. When officers arrived, they discovered Erin deceased in a backyard from an apparent gunshot wound. In the space of only a few moments, a life was lost, and countless hearts were left shattered.
Authorities said Martens fled the scene before officers arrived and was later located in Salina, Kansas, where he was taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to the Barton County Jail, where he remains in custody as the investigation continues.
But beyond the police investigation and the heartbreaking headlines, there is Erin—the person who mattered to the people who loved her. She was someone with memories, dreams, laughter, relationships, and a place in the hearts of others that can never simply be erased.
